And it’s one of the most effective, too.

It’s so simple that it amazes me when I see people fighting to get others to cooperate, whether that’s at work, home or when out shopping.

So what is this simple technique?

It’s an old principle, thousands of years old actually.

To get the best out of people, you need to treat them with compassion and respect. Treat them in the way you’d like to be treated, in other words.

You’ve probably heard the old proverb: “You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar”.

This is the absolute truth.

When you’re nice to people, they feel obliged to reciprocate and help.

Yes, I know you get the odd person who sees you as a soft touch, but even then, the best way to respond is to be kind. At the very least, it reduces your stress. Oh, and don’t dwell on the interaction later (Note to self!).

To be nice doesn’t mean to be soft. You can still set firm boundaries and deadlines, but you don’t need to bawl and scream if someone misses a deadline, or oversteps the mark.

Nor do you need to create scape-goats, browbeat people or keep bringing up past mistakes.
